African champions Mamelodi Sundowns have released veteran former Bafana Bafana midfielder Teko Modise, the club confirmed in a statement.

Modise, 34, has been a bit-part player for the Brazilians in recent seasons as Hlompho Kekana and Tiyani Mabunda hold down the central midfield positions, and the player and club have reached a mutual agreement to part ways.

He leaves Sundowns as a free agent after a one-year option on his contract was not renewed having spent six-and-a-half years with the club following his arrival from Orlando Pirates.

"Mamelodi Sundowns has decided to release Teko Modise from his contractual obligations in order for him to negotiate a good contract for himself at this stage of his football career," read the club statement.

"Mamelodi Sundowns is grateful to Teko for his many years of loyal service to the club and wishes him everything of the very best.

"Teko played an important part in the two PSL titles and the CAF Championship [Champions League] as well as the CAF Super Cup which Mamelodi Sundowns won during the past season."

Modise's availability will put several South African clubs on alert, although most will be turned away by his wage demands. A move to Europe is unlikely at this stage of his career.
