Six Malaysian teams face points deduction for unpaid wages to players

Six teams from the top two tiers of Malaysian football will be docked points if they fail to settle outstanding players' wages by Friday.

Two sides from the Malaysia Super League and four from the Malaysia Premier League owe around RM5 million in salaries, plus income tax and retirement fund contributions.

"These six teams have until Friday to settle their outstanding amount. Otherwise, they will be docked points," FMLLP CEO Kevin Ramalingam told The Star.

"The teams have been given ample time. And we have also constantly reminded them about the consequences of not settling the wages."

Ramalingam declined to name the teams who are facing sanctions, but added that new Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) boss, the Crown Prince of Johor, supported the punishments.

"The Tunku Mahkota Johor views this matter seriously. He has always advocated prudent spending. He is on the same page with us on this issue," Ramalingam said.

Two years ago, Pahang were docked six competition points, ruling them out of a place in Asian competitions, after being found guilty of failing to fulfil their financial obligations with a former player.

But this promises to be a series of punishments felt by one quarter of the teams in the top two divisions of Malaysian football.

"We know some teams are facing financial constraints. To help them, we're willing to accept scheduled payments to the players involved. We want these teams to work on settling their debts," Ramalingam said.

"I hope the teams can solve this problem and update us immediately to avoid sanctions."
