Negeri Sembilan can learn from JDT to upset Kedah in Cup - Taylor Regan

Negeri Sembilan captain Taylor Regan hopes that the experience of playing in front of a hostile Johor crowd earlier this year will help them upset Kedah in the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Cup.

The Jangs travel to Alor Setar on Saturday night, with the scores 0-0 after last month's first leg in Seremban.

Kedah, the losing 2015 finalists and a strong third on the Malaysia Super League table, are hot favourites to see off the visitors from the second division.

But Regan believes that if Negeri can make a good start, they will have a chance of surprising Tan Cheng Hoe's team.

"We learnt, when we knocked out of the FA Cup by JDT in Johor, it is important to try and keep their fans quiet for as long as possible," Regan told ESPN FC.

"This is the biggest match for Negeri in many years. We hope we can make our state proud."

Gary Phillips' side put up a brave performance when they lost 4-1 to eventual champions JDT in the third round on March 4. After conceding two goals in the first 15 minutes, they tightened up, and showed that they could hold their own against the millionaires from Johor.

Just like JDT, Kedah are packed with attacking talent, with New Zealand international striker Shane Smeltz, alongside Kosovan whiz Liridon Krasniqi and Brazilian Thiago Augusto, not to mention club captain Baddrol Bakhtiar.

"Smeltz is arguably the form striker of the Super League, and it's hard to see a better front third in Malaysia right now," 27-year-old Regan said. "But we have a team of hard working young players, who listen, and will give 100 percent, no matter who they are up against. "

A full house is expected at the Darul Amam Stadium for the visit of Negeri, who stunned Felda United in their final group match last month to qualify for the knockout stage.

Regan, former captain of the Newcastle Jets who had many duels with Smeltz in the A-League, predicted that his team would embrace a hostile atmosphere, with the majority of a 40,000 crowd against them.

"It is why you play football... to make your supporters cheer and make opposition supporters cry," Regan said. "We have to be smart. We are in their home stadium. It's going to be tough, but I trust and believe in my teammates."
