South Africa striker Mphela pushes for MSL import spot at Terengganu

South Africa national striker Katlego Mphela remains on the cusp of selection as he pushes his claims for an import spot at Malaysian Super League (MSL) side Terengganu FA for the 2016 season.

Mphela, who has earned 53 international caps since 2005, could feature in another trial game for the Turtles on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old hopes to earn a contract in Terengganu alongside fellow foreigners Vincent Bikana (Cameroon), Gustavo Lopez (Argentina) and Issey Nakajima-Farran (Canada).

After Paulo Rangel's departure for Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), ambitious Terengganu are looking for a new striker, but sources tell ESPN FC that they aren't yet convinced that Mphela is the answer.

He is best known for scoring a spectacular long-range goal against Spain in the third place playoff game in the 2009 Confederations Cup on home soil. The equaliser sent the match against the then European champions into extra-time.

Gauteng-born Mphela also appeared in the 2010 World Cup and played for Strasbourg in France, in addition to South African clubs Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs.

His potential teammate Nakajima-Farran will be missing from Terengganu's next trial games because he is in California preparing for Canada's friendly against the United States in Carson, CA, on Feb. 5.

Terengganu, who finished fourth last season, open their 2016 MSL campaign at home to Penang on Feb. 13.
