Bernd Schuster to leave Malaga post

Malaga coach Bernd Schuster has announced he will leave his post at the end of the season, having been told by the club his services are no longer required.#INSERT type:image caption:Malaga's game against Levante will be Bernd Schuster's last in charge of the club.END#

The 54-year-old German took charge of the Andalusian team on a five-year deal last June, but results have been inconsistent and they lie 13th in the Primera Division table ahead of their final match against Levante.

Speculation has been growing in recent days over Schuster's future, amid reports of conflicts with players and the club being linked with Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino.

And on Thursday, Schuster confirmed he will not be in charge next season -- although he insisted it was not his decision to leave.

"Yesterday I was told I would not be staying on, but it was not a big surprise because I suspected this would happen,'' he told a news conference.

"I'm leaving very happy because we have done our job and everything is okay. I have to accept and respect that decision.

"I have not been told the reasons why I won't be staying on but that doesn't matter. I tried my hardest but the club has an important responsibility and it's something I have to accept.

"I disagree with the decision though, because I think I could have done the job, knowing the difficulties.''

Malaga secured their top-flight status last weekend with an impressive 1-1 draw at table-toppers Atletico Madrid.
