New England Revolution part ways with GM Mike Burns

Less than a week after firing its manager, the New England Revolution has done the same with GM Mike Burns.

"As an original Revolution player and throughout his time with the club's front office, Michael has always been a terrific ambassador for the club," said Revolution President, Brian Bilello. "His impact on the team and organization has been felt in many ways and we are grateful for his commitment and service to the New England Revolution."

Burns had entered his eighth year in the post, having previously served as the team's director of player personnel. He also spent five seasons as a player with the Revs from 1996-2000. His tenure as GM included a trip to the 2014 MLS Cup final, as well as reaching the final of the 2016 U.S. Open Cup. But recent years have seen the Revolution's results fade, with the team having last reached the MLS postseason in 2015.

The move comes on the heels of Brad Friedel being let go as manager last week, and being replaced by erstwhile assistant Mike Lapper. The technical side of the organization is now, at least for the moment, in the hands of Lapper and director of scouting and player personnel Remi Roy though Bilello hinted that a replacement for Burns could be made shortly.

"In light of recent results and the team's on-field direction over the last few seasons, we felt it was time to take the soccer side of the organization in a different direction. We expect to make an announcement related to leadership of the soccer organization in the coming days."

ESPN's Taylor Twellman reported that former U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena has emerged as a candidate for both positions.
