FC Dallas names academy director Luchi Gonzalez as new coach

FC Dallas has named club academy director Luchi Gonzalez as its new coach, the club announced on Sunday.

Gonzalez becomes the club's seventh boss in franchise history and takes over for Oscar Pareja, who moved on to Liga MX side Tijuana earlier this month.

At 38, he becomes the second-youngest manager in Major League Soccer. Terms were not disclosed.

"Luchi is an outstanding teacher, a smart tactician and has a keen understanding of what it takes to build a successful team," said FC Dallas chairman and CEO Clark Hunt. "We are excited about his passion for FC Dallas and his vision for the future of the club. Luchi had championship success with our Academy and we're confident he will build on that as a head coach in MLS."

Gonzalez has been with the club since 2012 and has had various roles in its academy system. He played collegiately at nearby SMU, MAC Hermann Trophy -- awarded to college soccer's top player -- before entering MLS as the sixth overall selection in the 2002 SuperDraft, picked by the San Jose Earthquakes. The Hialeah, Florida native also played for the Colorado Rapids and spent time overseas in Sweden and Peru.
