Toronto FC blanks New England Revolution; Texas derby ends in draw

Toronto FC kicked off Major League Soccer's Rivalry Week with a 2-0 win against the New England Revolution at BMO Field on Friday night.

Eastern Conference-leading Toronto got on the scoreboard early when Armando Cooper's cross found Drew Moor at the back post and his lunging effort beat Cody Cropper to make it 1-0 in the 11th minute.

The Revs saw multiple chances go begging in the second half -- Kei Kamara, in particular, frustrated on several attempts.

With the result almost assured, Sebastian Giovinco added a stoppage-time goal to put the match away for good, as Toronto secured the win to pad their lead in the standings.

The goal was Giovinco's 50th since making the move to Major League Soccer.

New England's next match is away to the Philadelphia Union on July 2, while Toronto will travel to play FC Dallas on July 1.

In the later game, FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo ended in a 1-1 draw in the Texas derby.

Erick Torres opened the scoring for the hosts in the 17th minute on the counter-attack. The league's second-highest scorer settled a pass from Adolfo Machado and blasted an unstoppable shot past Jesse Gonzalez in the Dallas goal to give his team a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Max Urruti levelled matters for FC Dallas in the 59th minute, taking a Michael Barrios pass and slotting home from the center of the penalty area to make it 1-1.

A frantic closing 10 minutes saw both teams come close, before the intrastate rivalry ended with both sides taking a single point in a match with playoff implications in the Western Conference.
