The New York Red Bulls rallied to beat expansion club Atlanta United 2-1 in front of a capacity crowd at Bobby Dowd Stadium in the first weekend of matches in the 2017 Major League Soccer season.

Yamil Asad scored Atlanta's first-ever goal in the 25th minute, slotting home from six yards away from a Tyrone Mears cross.

The hosts looked the likelier to score a second before New York levelled matters in the 75th minute when Daniel Royer rose highest to head home from a corner kick.

Despite struggling in the second half, New York then took the lead through a Anton Walkes own goal in the 82nd minute to make it 2-1.

The win was an important result for New York, who had just been eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals by the Vancouver Whitecaps this week.

Orlando City SC christened its brand-new stadium with a 1-0 win against New York City FC in front of a sold-out crowd.

Cyle Larin had the home supporters going wild in the 15th minute when he headed home at the far post from a Giles Barnes cross for the game's only goal.

Barnes had just entered the match as a substitute for Orlando City captain Kaka, who went down with an injury in the opening 10 minutes of the match.

David Villa played Alexander Ring through in the 31st minute with a fine flick, but Orlando's Joe Bendik smothered the attempt to preserve the hosts' lead.

NYCFC dominated possession and chances throughout the first half, but Orlando held on to lead 1-0 at half-time.

Jack Harrison should have had the visitors level in the 53rd minute, but another save from Bendik denied the New York City midfielder's well-hit shot from close range.

The Orlando heat seemed to wear on both teams as the game progressed, with both New York City's Rodney Wallace and Orlando's Larin being subbed off after the hour mark.

New York substitute Sean Okoli was next to test Bendik, twice breaking free behind the Orlando defense and firing from the top of the penalty area and twice being denied by hosts' goalkeeper.

The Vancouver Whitecaps and Philadelphia Union settled for a 0-0 draw.

The hosts' best opportunity came in the 66th minute. Defender Jordan Harvey took a corner kick from midfielder Cristian Techera and let go a left-footed shot. Goalkeeper Andre Blake was beaten, but defender Keegan Rosenberry blocked the shot.

Philadelphia's Chris Pontius had a chance in the 16th minute with a header, but Harvey cleared the ball.

In a bid to create more offence, Whitecaps coach Carl Robinson substituted new striker Fredy Montero and recently acquired forward Brek Shea into the match in the 59th minute. In the 83rd, Shea sent a dangerous cross into the box that diving Blake punched away.
