San Diego investors group unveils complete plan for new stadium site

The group heading up San Diego's bid for an MLS expansion franchise released a full plan for its stadium site on Monday.

La Jolla, California-based FS Investors have proposed to destroy the former home of the NFL's San Diego Chargers, Qualcomm Stadium, and convert the site into "SoccerCity" -- a 166-acre space consisting a 30,000-seat stadium, residential, office and retail space, 55 acres of parks, and a trolley line among other features.

The entirety of the project is to be completed over a 15-20 year span. The stadium, which will house a potential MLS team and San Diego State football, is slated to be ready by 2020 at an estimated cost of around $200 million.

The plan for the site -- expected to cost around $2.5 billion -- also includes flexibility to build a separate NFL stadium on the site should the city attract a new team. The Chargers left the city for Los Angeles earlier this year after spending six decades in San Diego.

"This concept offers exciting opportunities for major league soccer, more parkland and Aztecs football without public subsidy," San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer said in a statement.

"Now it's time to examine the plan in detail to make sure it makes sense for taxpayers. I look forward to reviewing the proposal presented to the public today, as well as the public discussion to come."

To move the process along, the next step is for a petition campaign that will begin in March. FS Investors will be looking to procure 120,000 signatures from San Diego voters by the end of the following month as a show of public support for the redevelopment project.
