New York City FC midfielder Andoni Iraola is retiring after a 16-year professional career, the MLS club announced on Thursday.

The former Spanish international, 34, joined NYCFC from La Liga side Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2015 and made 40 appearances in his season-and-a-half in the Big Apple.

"I would like to thank everyone inside and outside of the club who has made me feel at home from the very first moment," Iraola, who also thanked City's fans, told the club's official website. "I would especially like to thank my teammates," he added.

Iraola, a native of Usurbil, Spain, made over 400 appearances for Athletic between 2003-15.

He won seven caps with La Furia Roja.
