Minnesota United FC set to make announcements with MLS on Friday

Minnesota United FC will make several announcements about the club's future at an event on Friday, the club and Major League Soccer confirmed.

MLS commissioner Don Garber is scheduled to speak in St. Paul, along with club owner Bill McGuire and Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton.

Garber has previously said he hoped that Minnesota, which currently plays in the NASL, could move to MLS in 2017, along with fellow expansion franchise Atlanta United.

And last month, as the commissioner confirmed Atlanta's 2017 entry, he also said: "We know we have another announcement in a couple of weeks of who will join them."

The Pioneer Press reported on Tuesday that the announcement will confirm Minnesota's place in MLS for next season.

Plans for a new stadium are still being finalised with the St. Paul City Council, as well as the Minnesota state legislature, so the team would need to play in an existing venue in 2017 -- widely reported to be the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium.

The name of the club has also been called into question, with Atlanta and D.C. already staking claim to the "United" moniker, according to the FiftyFive. One blog.
