New MLS club Atlanta United seals Kenwyne Jones signing for next season

Kenwyne Jones has been linked with Everton.
Kenwyne Jones will play in MLS next season with Atlanta United.

New Major League Soccer franchise Atlanta United completed the signing of forward Kenwyne Jones on Friday.

The Premier League veteran will move to MLS when Atlanta begins play next season.

"Kenwyne is a player we have known about and watched for a long time," Atlanta technical director Carlos Bocanegra said. "He is a big physical forward who can punish you in the air or behind the defense. We're very happy that the timing worked out and we were able to acquire him during this transfer window."

Jones, 31, has scored 23 international goals for Trinidad and Tobago. He played in England with Southampton, Sunderland, Stoke, Cardiff and Bournemouth, before going on loan to Al Jazira in United Arab Emirates last season.

Before joining up with his new club, Jones will get plenty of experience against MLS competition as he appears to have sealed a loan to T&T club Central FC, which will face both the Vancouver Whitecaps and Sporting Kansas City in the CONCACAF Champions League, starting next month.

"Kenwyne is a well-known player in the region, with top level production and experience in England and for the Trinidad and Tobago National Team," Bocanegra said. "He is an absolute handful for defenders."

Atlanta United are also expected to add winger Hector Villalba for next season, after his Argentine club San Lorenzo announced on Tuesday he had been sold to MLS.

Liga MX club Tijuana has been reported as a possibly loan destination for Villalba for the rest of 2016.
