Chris Pontius had a goal and an assist and the Philadelphia Union beat Columbus Crew SC 3-2 on Wednesday night to extend their Eastern Conference lead.

Philadelphia is unbeaten in its last eight games -- with three wins and five draws -- to tie a franchise mark.

Pontius tied it at 1-1 in the 21st minute. He trapped a long cross, took four touches along the 18-yard box and scored through traffic.

In the second half, Pontius connected with Vincent Nogueira in the 57th for a 2-1 lead. Pontius' cross went over a crowd in front of goal and Nogueira's shot from distance deflected into the back of the net.

Fabian Herbers scored his first MLS goal in the 84th for a 3-1 lead. Ilsinho played a through ball on a fast break and Herbers cut back his defender to curl it inside the far post.

Columbus (3-5-5) got on the board in the 14th minute on Ola Kamara's fourth goal in seven career MLS games. Cristian Martinez made it 3-2 in the 93rd minute by heading in Ethan Finlay's cross.

Jordan Morris and Joevin Jones scored four minutes apart late in the second half and the Seattle Sounders beat D.C. United 2-0 to end a three-game losing streak.

The Sounders had only scored 10 goals in 11 games, including one goal in three losses since a 2-0 win on May 7. D.C. United has not scored against Seattle in their last six meetings, going 0-5-1.

Morris, who scored his fifth goal in the 79th minute, had a give-and-go with Jones. He fed Morris in the middle, who sent it back out left to Jones for a hard shot that diving D.C. keeper Bill Hamid got his left hand on, deflecting the ball back out front. A D.C. defender tried to head it away but it went to Morris, who sent a hard shot into the net before Hamid could scramble back into position.

Minutes later Osvaldo Alonso slipped a pass to Jones on the left slide and the defender who came on as a forward in the 74th minute, slotted it past Hamid for his first goal.

Hamid made six saves but Sounders keeper Stefan Frei only had to make on stop on D.C.'s 15 shots.

Both teams were without two players preparing for Copa America with their national team, including Seattle's Clint Dempsey and D.C.'s Steve Birnbaum with the U.S. team.

Liam Ridgewell scored early and the Portland Timbers earned their first shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes, despite playing shorthanded the entire second half.

Dairon Asprilla was sent off with a red card at the end of the first half and the Timbers played with 10 men the rest of the way.

The loss snapped a three-game undefeated streak for the Earthquakes, who were without coach Dominic Kinnear because of a minor car accident Wednesday.

Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson -- making his eighth start this year in place of Adam Larsen Kwarasey, who is out because of a torn ligament in his finger -- had his first clean sheet of the season.

It was the last match for both teams until June 18 as Major League Soccer goes on a break for the Copa America Centenario. Sixteen nations, including the United States, are playing in the event across the country.

The tournament opens Friday with the U.S. national team facing Colombia at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

Several players were missing from both teams on Wednesday because of the tournament, including Portland's Darlington Nagbe and San Jose's Chris Wondolowski, both on the U.S. squad.

Additionally, Portland was without Jermaine Taylor, who is playing for Jamaica. San Jose was also missing Simon Dawkins (Jamaica), Anibal Godoy and Alberto Quintero (Panama). Earthquakes defender Kip Colvey of New Zealand was called up for the OFC Nations Cup.

Wondolowski leads the Quakes with seven goals.

It was Diego Valeri's 100th appearance for the Timbers, becoming the fifth player in team history to reach the mark. On San Jose's side, Shea Salinas made his 172nd appearance with the club, moving him into sole possession of third on the franchise list.

Ridgewell scored in the 11th minute, heading in a free kick from Diego Valeri. After gesturing to the fans, he rolled on the turf in celebration, something that has been dubbed the "RidgyRoll."

Asprilla was sent off with a red card at the end of the first half after for elbowing San Jose's Jordan Stewart in the head. It was difficult to determine from the replay if there was intent.

The Timbers were coming off a 1-1 draw at Chicago last weekend. Portland is undefeated in two matches following a three-game losing streak.

San Jose was coming off a scoreless draw at home against Dallas last weekend.
