Major League Soccer on Tuesday announced an "elevated" security policy for fans entering games. Upon entry to stadiums, the league will now subject all fans to full screening "via a full pat down or with the use of a search wand of magnetometers." The new policy also greatly limits bags that fans are allowed to bring into games. MLS said the new standards will bring "MLS events in line with security measures taken by the other professional sports leagues in North America." Increased security is likely to cause longer delays entering stadiums, and the Philadelphia Union advised fans to "arrive early." "Public safety is a top priority and the enhanced security measures will ensure that fans are able to continue to enjoy MLS and [Soccer United Marketing] events in a safe environment," MLS deputy commissioner Mark Abbott said in a statement. Each stadium will be in charge of determining their own protocols for security searches. "The safety of our fans, players and staff is paramount," said vice president Ray Whitworth. "The updated security measures bring us in line with professional sports leagues around the United States and Canada while maintaining the unique sports experience that is MLS." The new bag policy will prevent fans from bringing in large purses, coolers, computer and camera bags, briefcases, backpacks and luggage.
