It's an early-season matchup of leaders in the Eastern Conference when New York City FC play host to Toronto FC in the first game of the season at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon before an ESPN2 audience. (3:55)

Sebastian Giovinco scored in the 76th minute and Toronto FC tied New York City FC 2-2 on Sunday in the first game of the season at Yankee Stadium.

Giovinco, the reigning Major League Soccer MVP, has two goals and two assists in two games this season.

David Villa scored on a penalty kick in the 24th minute for New York FC and added another four minutes later for a 2-0 lead. Thomas McNamara was tripped just inside the corner of the box and Villa rolled the PK to the keeper's right.

After Toronto had several failed attempts to clear a free kick, Villa appeared to use an extended arm to control a loose ball but it wasn't called and he sent in another goal minutes later.

Damien Perquis made it 2-1 in first-half stoppage time when he got a sliding touch on Giovinco's free kick.

For the leveller, the Italian took four touches to split three defenders and rolled in a tying shot from distance for Toronto FC.

Chris Wondolowski and Quincy Amarikwa scored first-half goals and the San Jose Earthquakes beat defending MLS Cup champion Portland Timbers 2-1 in soggy conditions.

San Jose, which has been in MLS for 21 years, won its first two games of the season for the first time in team history. It was the first loss for Portland since Oct. 3, 2015 -- snapping a 10-game unbeaten streak.

Wondolowski scored his 111th goal of his career -- three behind Ante Razov for fourth on the MLS scoring list -- in the 30th minute for a 1-0 lead. Wondolowski cut between two defenders and redirected Anibal Godoy's cross at the near post for the goal.

Quincy Amarikwa made it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time. He won the ball on San Jose's side of midfield, sprinted past three Portland defenders and chipped goalkeeper Adam Larsen Kwarasey from distance.

Jack McInerney, who was traded to the Timbers on Jan. 13, scored his first goal for Portland in the 89th minute.

Portland lost a game to the Quakes for the first time in six matches.
