Revolution trade for Gershon Koffie to help replace Jermaine Jones

The New England Revolution acquired defensive midfielder Gershon Koffie in a trade with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday.

The 24-year-old Ghanaian can fill the hole left by Jermaine Jones, whose contract expired at the end of last season and who remains at a standstill in talks over a new deal.

The move also comes after the Revs' latest designated player signing Xavier Kouassi suffered a major knee injury while playing for FC Sion in Switzerland last weekend.

Vancouver will receive both general and targeted allocation money for Koffie, who had been with the club since they joined MLS in 2011.

He has scored nine goals with seven assists in 133 appearances for the Whitecaps.

"Gershon is a strong central midfield player who, at just 24, has proven success and experience in MLS," said Revolution general manager Michael Burns.

"We're pleased we were able to acquire him and we look forward to getting him into camp with the rest of our players and coaching staff as soon as possible."
