Penarol forward Diego Forlan wouldn't rule out MLS offer

Uruguayan forward Diego Forlan said he is a frequent visitor to Miami and wouldn't rule out playing in Major League Soccer someday.

The 2010 Golden Ball winner for best player at the 2010 World Cup and the two-time Pichichi trophy winner helped Penarol to the Apertura title in the Uruguay first division this month.

During a visit to Miami for an awards ceremony, he admitted that he wouldn't rule out an offer from an MLS club.

"You see on television that MLS is a tournament that attracts attention and the level of football has grown a lot," Forlan told Spanish site Deportestotalusa.com. "I still have not had an offer to come but we'll see."

Forlan, 36, said he is currently focused on Penarol's play in the Clausura tournament as well as getting the club ready for Copa Libertadores. There is a special tribute planned to Forlan, his father and his grandfather during the Copa Libertadores draw, which is set for Tuesday.

Penarol, ranked third by CONMEBOL, are one of eight clubs seeded, along with River Plate (2), Boca Juniors (1),  Nacional de Uruguay (5), Olimpia (7), Corinthians (9), Atletico Mineiro (13), San Lorenzo de Almagro (14).

Forlan also said that Uruguay is currently well-positioned with nine points in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying after the first four matches.

"We didn't reach our goal in Copa America [2015], but we are closing the year well and we are in a good spot for World Cup qualifying," he said.

During his career, Forlan has played for Manchester United, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan. In addition to the 2011 Copa América title, he helped lead Uruguay to a surprise fourth-place finish at the 2010 World Cup.

The veteran forward also congratulated his compatriot Luis Suarez for Barcelona's recent Club World Cup victory.

"Luis is enjoying a great moment in his career and playing with the best club in the world and that makes me happy as well," Forlan said. "Without a doubt, you could see from way back that he was going to reach this level, and I am happy for him. I speak to him often, we get along well."

David Beckham recently said he would love to see Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic line up for his proposed MLS club in Miami.
