Luis Robles of New York Red Bulls named MLS goalkeeper of the year

Luis Robles has been named Major League Soccer's goalkeeper of the year, the league announced on Thursday.

The New York Red Bulls No. 1 started all 34 games this season, led the league with 18 wins and was the backbone of one of MLS' top defenses.

The 31-year-old University of Portland product edged out fellow finalists David Ousted of the Vancouver Whitecaps and D.C. United's Bill Hamid, who was last year's recipient, for the award.

Robles recorded nine shutouts and posted a goals against average of 1.26 this season.

He also was instrumental in the Red Bulls' Eastern Conference-best 43 goals allowed, and their MLS-best goal differential in the 2015 season.
