David Villa says offseason loan to Barcelona unlikely

New York City FC striker David Villa said he's unlikely to go out on loan to a European club, despite various scenarios that pit him as finishing out the year in Spain.

"I am getting calls from everywhere ever since they found out we cannot be [mathematically] in the playoffs," Villa said on Spanish program El Murcielago on Levante TV about the end to New York City FC's season. "They make the hypothesis that I will be loaned out. But I don't think that would be the best decision for the club, they will want me to rest.

"I have a three-year contract in New York and they are expecting a lot from me and there is much I want to give them as well. To return to Europe is not really an option right now."

Theoretically, Villa could compete in Spain on loan until March before returning to the United States, and various Spanish newspapers have suggested that Barcelona could take the 33-year-old for the first three months of 2016 as soon as their FIFA transfer ban ends.

The loan of Villa would keep Barcelona under their current team and league salary cap.

In MLS this season, Villa has 17 goals in 28 games.
