Kei Kamara, Sebastian Giovinco named to MLS All-Star gameday squad
Major League Soccer's top two scorers Kei Kamara and Sebastian Giovinco were among those selected to the MLS All-Star Game gameday squad on Saturday.
Neither player had been voted to the Fan XI last week, but they were chosen to play by coach Pablo Mastroeni.
Kamara, of the Columbus Crew, has 13 goals, while Toronto FC's Giovinco scored his 12th on Saturday.
The full list of Mastroeni's selections:
Goalkeepers: David Ousted (Vancouver Whitecaps)
Defenders: Tony Beltran, (Real Salt Lake), Laurent Ciman (Montreal Impact), Chad Marshall (Seattle Sounders), Chris Moor (Colorado Rapids), Chris Tierny (New England Revolution)
Midfielders: Fabian Castillo (FC Dallas)
Forwards: Sebastian Giovinco (Toronto FC), Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy), Kei Kamara (Columbus Crew)
Mastroeni, who is also the coach of the host Colorado Rapids, reserved one selection for his player Chris Moor, who has played well after tearing his ACL less than a year ago.
"I've always wanted to go to an All-Star Game and individual awards are great but [being picked] feels really good," Moor said. "Hopefully my body of work has been enough to prove that I need to be in an All-Star Game, especially here in front of my home fans which is awesome."
MLS also announced that Seattle's Obefemi Martins, the fans' "More Than a Vote" winner, would be unable to play because of injury.
The other fan's choices to play in the All-Star Game are: goalkeeper Nick Rimando; defenders Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez and DaMarcus Beasley; midfielders Kaka, Michael Bradley, Benny Feilhaber, and Graham Zusi; and forwards David Villa and Clint Dempsey.
The coach's and fans' selections will be joined on the team by the two commissioner's picks: NYCFC's Frank Lampard and LA's Steven Gerrard.
In all, representatives from 14 of the 20 MLS teams will take on Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur on July 29 in Colorado.
Half of the 22-man squad was named to the All-Star squad for the first time.
