NYCFC signs Colombian center-back Jefferson Mena

New York City FC announced the signing of Colombian center-back Jefferson Mena on Tuesday.

Mena, 26, has spent his entire career with Independiente Medellin in his homeland.

"I'm very excited to join an ambitious club like New York City FC and to work with a very strong squad," he said in a statement. "I look forward to meeting my new teammates and learning from the coaching staff while exploring my new home in the great city of New York."

The addition will be welcome for a shaky NYCFC backline that allowed four goals in a draw in their most recent game on Sunday.

NYCFC have conceded 27 times in 21 games.

"Jefferson is a player I have been watching for a while and I couldn't be happier to add him to our squad," NYCFC coach Jason Kreis said. "His athletic ability and speed will provide us with a strong new option in the center back position.

"He's a good technical player just about to hit the prime of his career and will add international quality and experience to the team."

NYCFC sent allocation money to the LA Galaxy in exchange for the international roster spot used on Mena.
