New England midfielder Jermaine Jones to miss 6-8 weeks

The New England Revolution will be without midfielder Jermaine Jones for 6-8 weeks.

The franchise announced on Friday that the World Cup starter had surgery to repair a sports hernia.

Jones, who featured on the United States' World Cup team in 2014, has played just nine games for New England this season.

He was left off Jurgen Klinsmann's 35-man preliminary Gold Cup squad due to a groin injury he suffered in May.

Jones, now in his second season in MLS, led the Revolution to the MLS Cup finals last season, where they lost to the LA Galaxy.
