Red Bulls beat Crew to take first in East; D.C. United top Galaxy late

Mike Grella chipped in the decisive goal from long distance in the 67th minute and the New York Red Bulls beat the Columbus Crew 2-1 on Saturday to move to the top of the Eastern Conference.

Bradley Wright-Phillips set up Grella's goal by blocking the ball into an open space just outside the 18-yard box. It was Grella's first touch after entering the game as a substitute and the 1,000th MLS goal for the Red Bulls franchise.

Wright-Phillips opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the 49th minute. Lloyd Sam drew the penalty against Emanuel Pogatetz with a cutback in the box.

Tony Tchani evened the score for the Crew with a run to the far post and open-net finish after the deflection of Federico Higuain's corner kick. Higuain received a second yellow card for a show of frustration in the 83rd minute and the Crew finished with 10 men.

The unbeaten Red Bulls moved into first in the Eastern Conference with two wins and a draw, one point ahead of D.C. United.

Chris Pontius headed home a last-gasp winner and D.C. United defeated the LA Galaxy 1-0.

The Galaxy controlled most of the game and came closest to scoring in the 67th minute when Stefan Ishizaki hit the post with a shot from outside the box.

The breakthrough for the home side came in the 93rd minute when Nick DeLeon showed some skill to control the ball and cross to Pontius, who shook off a defender to score the winner.

Kelyn Rowe scored twice and the New England Revolution beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 in steady snow and hail for their first victory of the season.

New England got its first goal of the season in the 21st minute. A turnover created a chance for Rowe, whose blast from 17 yards deflected off the head of defender Shaun Francis, who committed the original turnover.

The Revolution added their second 16 minutes later. Chris Tierney's left-footed free kick was headed by a diving Darrius Barnes to Rowe and he buried it past David Bingham, who could only get a hand on it.

Chris Wondolowski halved the deficit with a penalty in the 62nd minute, awarded after Scott Caldwell clipped Clarence Goodson in the box, but the Quakes could not find an equalizer.

Ike Opara scored early and Sporting Kansas City made the goal stand up, beating New York City FC 1-0 in blustery conditions with intermittent flurries.

Sporting KC broke through 12 minutes in when Opara powered home a leaping header from the center of the box just inside the near post off a long throw in by Matt Besler.

David Villa did not play for NYCFC with a slight groin strain, while SKC's Graham Zusi pulled up and ended his day in the 40th minute.

With Frank Lampard in the crowd to watch his future team, NYCFC suffered its first loss in its initial season after a win and two draws.

Brazilian star Kaka and countryman Pedro Ribeiro scored goals to help Orlando City rally for a 2-2 draw with the Montreal Impact.

Ignacio Piatti opened the scoring for Montreal on a penalty in the 14th minute, and Jack McInerney made it 2-0 in the 27th minute.

But Kaka fed Ribeiro for a goal from close range two minutes later, and then just seconds after that Ribeiro returned the favor by sliding a pass to Kaka, who sailed it into the top left corner.

Robert Earnshaw scored in the 90th minute in his Vancouver debut and the Whitecaps opened their Cascadia Cup defense with a 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers.

Signed earlier in the week, Earnshaw entered the game in the 86th minute as a substitute. Midfielder Nicolas Mezquida scored early in the first half for the Whitecaps, while Fanendo Adi scored for the Timbers.

FC Dallas played with 10 men for the majority of the night, but the Seattle Sounders failed to capitalize and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.

Kellyn Acosta received a red card for a high kick in the 18th minute and FC Dallas failed to open the season with a fourth straight win for the first time in club history.

Chad Barrett narrowly missed wide left on a couple of the best chances for Seattle, a point-blank header in the 54th minute and a breakaway in the 72nd.

Fabian Castillo had the best look for FC Dallas in the 55th minute but missed on a right-footed attempt from outside the box.

Tyler Deric had three saves for his second shutout of the season, helping the Houston Dynamo preserve a scoreless draw with the Colorado Rapids.

Deric had the play of the match in the 31st minute when he deflected Marcelo Sarvas' eight-yard shot over the crossbar. Sarvas got open for the shot after a chest pass from Gabriel Torres and Deric was only able to get his hand on it at the last moment.
