FC Dallas wins third straight game to start MLS season

FC Dallas won its third straight match to start the MLS season with a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union in a game moved back one day because of snow at PPL Park.

The Union's Zach Pfeffer was sent off with a straight red card for an elbow to the head of Mauro Diaz in the 42nd minute and Dallas broke the deadlock soon after halftime.

Tesho Akindele opened the scoring after substitute defender Fabinho, who came on for Sheanon Williams in the first half, cleared the ball directly into the striker's path. Akindele raced to the loose ball first and fired home.

Substitute Ryan Hollingshead scored a second for Dallas in the 59th minute by rolling in a shot from distance through traffic.

Meanwhile in Carson, Robbie Keane and Nathan Sturgis traded early goals, as the LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo settled for a 1-1 draw.

Keane opened the scoring in the third minute, beating Sturgis with a cut near the top of the box and finishing despite goalkeeper Tyler Deric's deflection.

Sturgis answered in the 11th minute for the Dynamo. David Horst headed Oscar Garcia's corner kick back into the middle of the 6-yard box and Sturgis ran underneath it for an easy finish.

The Galaxy snapped a four-game regular-season losing streak to the Dynamo. Houston returned to the Western Conference this season after a four-year absence.

Deric preserved the draw with all three of his saves in the final 25 minutes, highlighted by a diving block in the 71st.

Dynamo midfielder Ricardo Clark left the game late in the first half with a chest injury.

In Orlando, Raul Octavio Rivero netted a late, late winning to lift the Vancouver Whitecaps over Orlando City.

Pedro Morales sent a free kick toward the goal in the 96th minute and Rivero redirected it past Orlando City goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.

Rivero, in his first MLS season, scored his third goal in as many games -- including two late winners.

Vancouver was penalized for time wasting in the 95th minute and it appeared the match was over. Darwin Ceren's careless challenge 40 yards out on the left flank set up the key free kick.

Orlando City dominated possession (62.7 percent), but Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted made only one save in his 19th career MLS shutout.

Impact starting forward Cameron Porter left the game on a stretcher as 10-man Montreal held on for a 0-0 draw with New England 0-0 on Saturday, spoiling the Revolution's home opener.

Porter, a rookie out of Princeton, went up for a header but came down awkwardly on his left leg in the 18th minute and left the game. He suffered ligament damage in his knee, the Impact told MLSsoccer.com.

"We have to wait and see tomorrow, when we go back, with our doctors," coach Frank Klopas said. "Hopefully, it's not too bad, but whatever it is, nowadays, if he needs to take care of something... We'll see. Let's keep our fingers crossed, and we'll [know] better tomorrow."

Hassoun Camara was sent off after receiving his second yellow card in the 61st minute for pulling down Juan Agudelo.

In Kansas City, Sporting KC goalkeeper Luis Marin earned his first shutout of the season with three saves in a scoreless draw between Sporting Kansas City and the Portland Timbers.

Marin's most notable save came at the end of the 60th minute on a reflexive block of Fanendo Adi's left-footed strike from 10 yards out.

Portland goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey recorded two saves to give the Timbers their third point of the season. Kwarasey earned his second shutout in three games -- the first came in his MLS debut on March 7 against Real Salt Lake.

Ike Opara nearly scored on a couple of headers for Sporting. The first was just wide in the ninth minute and the second went over the crossbar in the 77th.

It was the first draw in six all-time meetings.

New York City FC extended its unbeaten start in its maiden MLS season with a 0-0 draw in Colorado.

Shay Facey was sent off in the 82nd minute, but NYCFC held off the Rapids' 21-shot onslaught to move to five points on the year after a home win and two road draws.
