Jozy Altidore scores twice to lead Toronto FC past Vancouver

Jozy Altidore scored twice in his return to Major League Soccer to help Toronto FC win 3-1 at Vancouver.

Octavio Rivero opened the scoring in the 19th minute for the Whitecaps, but Altidore answered 13 minutes later by taking a through pass from fellow newcomer Sebastian Giovinco and dancing around Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted.

Robbie Findley put Toronto ahead in the second half, and Altidore wrapped up the points from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

After being hauled down in the box by Pa Modou Kah, Altidore chipped the ball home to double the number of goals he scored in 42 Premier League games for Sunderland over the past two seasons.

Blas Perez scored on a header in the 92nd minute and FC Dallas beat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0.

Perez was six yards out when he redirected a blast that Moises Hernandez sent wide. It was Perez's 32nd career MLS goal.

The Earthquakes applied the early pressure, forcing FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz to make both of his saves in the first 10 minutes.

The loss extends the Quakes' franchise-record winless streak to 16 games in coach Dominic Kinnear's return to the club after a 10-year absence.

Jairo Arrieta scored in the 58th minute and D.C. United beat the Montreal Impact 1-0 on Saturday for the Washington club's first season-opening victory since 2011.

After Bill Hamid's save, D.C. United pushed the ball up field and Arrieta slid the ball under Evan Bush, who had come out to the corner of the 18-yard box to attempt an interception of Chris Rolfe's lofted pass.

Three minutes later, United's Chris Pontius hit the crossbar from just outside the 6-yard box.

As Montreal searched for an equalizer, Impact winger Justin Mapp dislocated his left elbow in a scary moment and had to replaced in the 81st minute.

Giles Barnes scored in the 66th minute and Tyler Deric made five saves as the Houston Dynamo beat the Columbus Crew 1-0 to give a first first MLS win to Dynamo coach Owen Coyle.

Kofi Sarkodie took a long forward pass from Raul Rodriguez and made a run on the right. He froze Waylon Francis with a stop move, and then fed Barnes at the penalty spot. Barnes' shot settled past the outstretched hand of Steve Clark and just under the crossbar.

Columbus' Federico Higuain hit the crossbar in an effort to draw even five minutes later.

Deric made several saves late to preserve the shutout. In the 53rd minute he made a diving stop of Kei Kamara's header in the upper right corner. He robbed Kristinn Steindórsson in the 65th minute and Kamara again in the 87th.

Kamara had one more chance in the 89th minute, but his header went wide.

The Philadelphia Union could not take advantage when Bobby Burling was sent off for the Colorado Rapids in a goalless draw.

Burling received a second yellow card in the 68th minute of his Rapids debut for taking down Sebastien Le Toux near midfield, but Philadelphia could not find a winner.

Philadelphia's best scoring chance came in the 86th minute. Cristian Maidana sent in a free kick from the edge of the 18-yard box, but Conor Casey's redirected header was blocked by quick-reacting Clint Irwin.

Casey had another header sail just wide in the fifth minute of extra time.

In Portland, Real Salt Lake's Nick Rimando made five saves to help RSL to a 0-0 draw with the Timbers.

Real Salt Lake has not lost in its past six season openers, all of them on the road.

The match marked the Portland debut of Nat Borchers, who spent seven years with Salt Lake. Borchers, a two-time MLS defender of the year, was a key contributor on Salt Lake's 2009 MLS Cup-winning team.
