Sounders give Obafemi Martins deal worth $3 million a year, sources say

The Seattle Sounders have been promoting Obafemi Martins as a league MVP candidate, and they are rewarding him accordingly.

Martins has signed a contract that would place him in the top 10 on Major League Soccer's list of highest-paid players, according to multiple sources.

Martins will have a two-year deal (with a one-year option) worth more than $3 million annually, nearly double his current yearly salary of $1.62 million.

The 29-year-old has scored 17 goals going into Saturday's final game of the regular season against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Martins has formed an increasingly effective pairing with U.S. national team captain Clint Dempsey as the Sounders attempt to complete a U.S. Open Cup-Supporters' Shield-MLS Cup treble.

The Sounders acquired Martins from Spain's Levante on a 3 million-euro transfer fee last year.

He's helped Seattle score 63 goals, second only to the Galaxy's 69 in MLS.
