Jermain Defoe sidelined 2-3 weeks

A groin strain will keep Toronto FC striker Jermain Defoe sidelined for 2-3 weeks, the club confirmed on Monday.

Defoe pulled out of this week's MLS All-Star Game on Sunday, a day after being a late scratch in Toronto's 2-0 win over the Montreal Impact.

Sporting Kansas City's Dom Dwyer replaced him on the squad that will face Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

TFC coach Ryan Nelsen told the Toronto Star that Defoe has been dealing with injury for some time.

"He's been feeling his groin for a few weeks now," Nelsen told the Star. "He's been going for over a year, pushing on 18 months at the end of this season and you get these little niggles with your body being worn down and that."

Defoe will likely miss a pair of important games for Toronto, who travel to Columbus on Saturday with the teams just two points apart in the standings, followed by a game away to MLS-best Sporting KC the following week.
