Maurice Edu added to All-Star squad

Philadelphia midfielder Maurice Edu and D.C. United defenders Bobby Boswell and Sean Franklin have joined the MLS All-Star squad as replacements.

They will replace Seattle defender Chad Marshall, and forward Robbie Keane and defender Omar Gonzalez of the Galaxy for Wednesday's MLS All-Star Game against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich (9:30 p.m. ET/ESPN2).

The Galaxy have a game scheduled for Friday against San Jose, which would have prevented Keane and Gonzalez from seeing significant minutes against Bayern, while Marshall suffered a back injury in a car accident last week.

Edu is in his first season back in MLS, on loan from Stoke in the Premier League. He has three goals and two assists in 18 games.

Boswell and Franklin have helped D.C. rebound from a last-place finish a year ago to title contenders. Boswell is in his second stint with United after six seasons with the Houston Dynamo.

Franklin, a former MLS Rookie of the Year, also joined D.C. this year after six seasons with the Galaxy.

"Given the limited minutes that Omar and Robbie would need to play due to having a game on Friday and the injury to Chad, I felt we needed to bring in Sean, Bobby and Maurice to provide us with more cover in the back," said All-Star coach Porter said. "This will also allow us to manage the other players' time so everyone is ready for their matches on the weekend."
