U.S. call-up would intrigue Dom Dwyer

The Last Call crew discusses the United States' future and reflects on some of the highlights of its run in Brazil.

Sporting Kansas City's prolific goal scorer Dom Dwyer was born and raised in England, but the 23-year-old says he would be interested in playing for the United States should he catch Jurgen Klinsmann's eye.

- ESPN FC roundtable: Klinsmann's plan for the future

"Every player wants to play on the international stage," Dwyer told MLSsoccer.com. "I think if I were to get called in the future and have an opportunity, I think that's something every player would love to do and dream of."

A former member of Norwich City's academy, Dwyer came to the U.S. in 2009 and played for Tyler (Tex.) Junior College before transferring to South Florida in 2011, where he was a coaches' second-team all-American.

He received his green card in 2012, once he was drafted by Sporting Kansas City. He would have to have to wait five years from that point -- 2017 -- to meet FIFA's residency requirement and be eligible for the U.S., but Dwyer said the idea of playing for the Yanks is intriguing.

"If the offer ever came to me, I think it would be a difficult one to say no to," Dwyer said. "I'm from England, born and raised there, but I've been in the U.S. for quite a few years and have a lot of love for this country and enjoy being here."

England-born Dom Dwyer said he would be interested in playing for the U.S. once he becomes eligible.

Dwyer has scored 14 goals in 18 games for Sporting KC this season, good for second in MLS behind another uncapped Englishman, Bradley-Wright Phillips of the New York Red Bulls, who has 15.

Any possible move to play his club soccer in Europe would jeopardize Dwyer's potential to play for the U.S. -- and an England call-up would eliminate it, though the forward acknowledges that is a slim possibility.

"I don't know where I'll be in 2017. You don't know where you'll be tomorrow. So you have to just kind of take it as it comes, and if the opportunity comes -- I'm not sure if [England manager] Roy Hodgson's going to be calling me any time soon. So we'll just have to wait and see."

Whether Klinsmann would include Dwyer in his plans for the buildup to the 2018 World Cup remains to be seen, though Sporting KC president Robb Heineman touted his player for the national squad on Twitter this week.
