Villa plays down Melbourne move

David Villa has hinted he may only join Melbourne City on loan for a short period, rather than for a full season as was first expected.

The 32-year-old became the first player signed by New York City, who will enter Major League Soccer in 2015, and it was thought he would go to A-League outfit Melbourne, another of the clubs in Manchester City's global family, in the meantime.

But the former Barcelona and Valencia forward, who is currently in Spain's World Cup squad, does not expect to spend long in Australia.

He told Radio Marca: "I am not moving to Australia. I will set up in New York after the summer and will be with a physical trainer until the start of the season. If I go to Melbourne it is only to play a game for a short period."

Villa has left Atletico Madrid after a solitary season at the club, when he helped them win La Liga and reach the Champions League final.

He is Spain's record scorer with 58 goals and has struck 297 times in his club career.
