United extend Eddie Johnson deal

WASHINGTON -- D.C. United extended the contract of U.S. national team forward Eddie Johnson and declared him a designated player under MLS rules.

United's move Thursday had been expected. Johnson's desire for a better contract spurred his trade from the Seattle Sounders to United in December.

Johnson has scored 64 goals in his MLS career, including 23 over the last two seasons with the Sounders. He also has 19 goals in 62 appearances for the U.S. team and is a likely choice for this year's World Cup squad.

United open their season Saturday against the Columbus Crew.
