Red Bulls acquire Richard Eckersley

Toronto FC on Monday sent defender Richard Eckersley to the New York Red Bulls for a fourth-round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.

Eckersley's contract is pending a physical and visa approval, the Red Bulls said.

“We were impressed with Richard’s play at Toronto FC and are delighted to acquire him. He has a good soccer brain and is an energetic defender who can also provide positive attacking qualities on the flanks,” said Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh. “Richard will immediately provide another solid and versatile option for us on our backline and will certainly compete for a starting role on our team.”

Toronto had been expected to deal Eckersley due to his salary. The MLS players union listed Eckersley's salary last season at $310,000, second-highest among the numbers made public for Toronto players.

Eckersley, 24, made 92 appearances for Toronto over three seasons. He originally joined the club on loan from English side Burnley FC in April 2011.

He signed a permanent contract with Toronto FC at the end of his loan in January 2012.
