Crew consider Hertha's Maik Franz

Hertha BSC Berlin defender Maik Franz has been approached by MLS club Columbus Crew, German football magazine kicker reports.

Franz, 32, has been struggling for minutes since suffering an torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in December 2011 and a shoulder injury that ruled the centre-back out for most of the 2012-13 campaign, which saw Hertha returning to the top flight at the end of the season.

This season Franz has not played a minute of Bundesliga football and featured in Hertha’s squad just once.

Franz, who has been dubbed "Iron Maik" by football fans in Germany for his style of play, has now been approached by MLS club Columbus Crew over a potential switch to Ohio, kicker reported in their Thursday print issue.

"That’s something that could tempt me," the Bundesliga veteran, who, at the age of 20, debuted for Wolfsburg in 2001 and since then has clocked up 192 Bundesliga and 40 Bundesliga II appearances, told kicker.

"But in the end everything needs to fit," he added.

Kicker reports that Hertha BSC are, however, also considering offering Franz, who is under contract until 2015, a new contract. Franz could then be made the marquee player for Hertha’s reserve, who are battling relegation in the fourth tier.
