Alessandro Nesta to retire at season end

Former AC Milan and Lazio defender Alessandro Nesta on Sunday announced his retirement following the end of the MLS season.

The 37-year-old Montreal Impact player and 2006 World Cup winner told Sky Sports he plans to move into coaching when he finishes playing.

"We'll see what level, but I feel that it's something that I can do," he said. "I plan to rest for a couple of months before learning the trade."

Nesta played over 200 games for the red half of Milan, winning two domestic championships, a Coppa Italia, two UEFA Super Cups and two Champions League crowns.

Those success-laden years followed on from his earlier career with Lazio where he first won the Serie A title, Coppa Italia, Super Cup and UEFA's Cup Winners' Cup.
