Clint Dempsey out Saturday
Clint Dempsey will not travel with the Sounders for Saturday’s game at Colorado, Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said Friday.
The game with the Rapids will be the third straight Dempsey has missed as he recovers from a hamstring injury.
"He's making progress, he's getting better, but for him to travel at this stage is probably still a little early," Schmid said, according to the Seattle Times.
Dempsey's lingering injury also raises questions about his fitness for the United States' two final World Cup qualifiers on Oct. 11 vs. Jamaica and Oct. 15 in Panama.
On Tuesday, U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said he expected Dempsey to play for Seattle this weekend and "therefore we expect him back in (U.S.) camp on Sunday."
The U.S. will release a roster for the qualifiers Sunday.
There was one bit of good news for the Sounders, though, as Schmid said midfielder Steve Zakuani is "very close" to returning from more than five months out after hernia surgery.
"We’ll see," Schmid said, according to the Times. "He’s been on the bench the last two games, and we were very close, I think, in the last game to putting him in, as well. He continues to make progress, so we’ll just see."
