Sounders deny Clint Dempsey contact

Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid insists the club have not made a move for United States captain Clint Dempsey.

Clint Dempsey: Linked with a move away from Tottenham.
Clint Dempsey appears likely to leave Spurs, but would he be tempted by a return to the MLS?

The Sounders have just announced that Shalrie Joseph will no longer occupy a designated player spot, leading to speculation that Tottenham attacker Dempsey could be set for a return to his homeland to take up that position.

However, Schmid said he has had no contact with Dempsey or his representatives about a switch to the Sounders.

“Not at this stage that I’m aware of. I know Clint, I’ve talked to him I follow his career, but there’s nothing there that I can say right now,” Schmid told Dave “Softy” Mahler on his weekly call-in on the 950 KJR show.

Prompted again by Mahler, Schmid would only say: “We’re always looking for good players. You can’t ever close the door on anything, but right now there is nothing that’s nailed down and concrete.”

Mahler’s line of questioning was sparked by two tweets from former MLS player and Fox Soccer analyst Keith Costigan.

Schmid told Mahler the team was shopping for a midfielder “or somebody who can play an attacking second striker type of thing in the center of the park.”

British media reports say the Tottenham midfielder is in the United States today to speak with Everton, who take on Real Madrid on Friday at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Dempsey did not always start for Andre Villas-Boas but still scored 12 goals last season. The 30-year-old Texan played in the MLS with the New England Revolution before heading to Fulham. He sealed a three-year, £6 million transfer to the Spurs for the 2012 season.
