Kevin Davies turns down Toronto move

Bolton captain Kevin Davies’ proposed transfer to MLS club Toronto FC is off, with the former England international saying he had decided against the move on legal advice.

Wanderers had agreed a nominal fee with Toronto for the 35-year-old striker, who is out of contract in the summer and will be released by the club.

Toronto head coach Ryan Nelsen, a regular opponent of Davies during his time at Blackburn, had offered him a contract in Canada, which the striker had seemed set to accept.

But now Davies has set his sights on ending his Bolton career by helping Wanderers – currently occupying the final play-off place in the Championship – to return to the Premier League.

He told the Bolton News: “It has been a complete rollercoaster since first speaking with Ryan Nelsen on April 18. As it stands today, I will not be leaving for Toronto FC, as reported.

“My young family and I were naturally very excited about the opportunity of going to Toronto on a short-term deal but, after legal advice, we felt that certain obstacles put in our way were too large to overcome.

“I have some fantastic memories of the last ten years [as a Bolton player] and feel honoured to have been the captain of this great club for the last five years. Hopefully, it will finish with a fairytale ending.”

However, Davies has not featured for the Trotters since the defeat to Ipswich on March 16.
