#MLSRank: Counting down the top 30 players in Major League Soccer today
You only have to go to places like Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Providence Park in Portland or CenturyLink Field in Seattle to know MLS fans are a rowdy bunch. They know who they like -- and who they don't -- on the pitch. They're not too shabby in raising a tifo or two, either.
Well, we thought we'd tap into that passion, stir things up a bit, at a time when MLS has never been more competitive and the product on the field never better. We give you ESPN FC's #MLSRank, our inaugural -- and definitive -- list of the 30 best players in MLS for the 2017 season.
We included all the positions, from strikers to keepers and everyone in between. But there can be only one No. 1 in all of MLS. (Hint: If you watched the ESPYs, you're getting warm. Real warm.)
We put together a ballot of the top players in the league. Then our MLS experts voted: The results you see here represent a weighted average of everyone's picks. There was a fair amount of hand-wringing from some, torturing over their selections ("Is he too high? What about him -- too low?), but we got there eventually. The voters were: ESPN FC writers, editors and analysts Jeff Carlisle, Adrian Healey, Taylor Twellman, Julie Stewart-Binks, Alejandro Moreno, Herculez Gomez, Sebastian Salazar, Dan Thomas, Jason Davis, Arch Bell, Matt Pentz, Noah Davis, Paul Carr, Chris Wondolowski, Austin Lindberg, David L'Heureux and Rick Metzroth. Also included: MLSSoccer.com's Matt Doyle.
Who made the cut? Disagree with our picks? Bring it. And use the hashtag #MLSRank.
