Lyon to cover stands with plastic after visiting fans threw cups of urine

French club Lyon are reportedly having to close off part of the visiting fans' section in their Parc OL home to prevent home supporters being sprayed with urine.

The 59,000-capacity state-of-the-art arena opened last January after a construction project costing an estimated €480 million.

The club, however, are having to give up part of the revenue earned from away supporters in the upper tier of their ground after complaints from Lyon fans seated below.

"We quickly noticed, particularly in the game against Marseille, that certain fans in the stands above were throwing cups filled with various liquids," stadium manager Xavier Pierrot told Le Progres.

Pierrot acknowledged urine made up part of the substances thrown, even if "if didn't happen every three seconds either."

Lyon will now cover the first few rows of seats in the visitors' section with a large tarpaulin, thereby pushing the front row of seats further back, in a bid to remedy the problem.
