Alexandre Lacazette must leave Lyon to progress - Louis Saha

Former Manchester United and France striker Louis Saha has told Alexandre Lacazette he must leave Lyon if he is to become a better player.

Lacazette, 25, will spearhead Lyon's attack when they face Juventus in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday with the French club looking for the positive result that will keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages alive.

A prolific scorer in Ligue 1, where he averages a goal every other game, the OL youth academy product has struggled to make a significant impact in the Champions League, and saw Gianluigi Buffon save his penalty as Juventus triumphed 1-0 in Lyon a fortnight ago.

Saha, 38, left Metz for Newcastle United in 1999 and played for the Magpies as well as Fulham, United, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland in the Premier League before ending his career at Lazio in 2013.

He told L'Equipe that Lacazette, who was reportedly the subject of interest from Arsenal, West Ham United and Atletico Madrid as well as Paris Saint-Germain last summer, would benefit from a move abroad.

"It's obligatory! It's a step every great player has to take. He's in his comfort zone in Lyon, he knows everyone," Saha said, highlighting the progress Atletico Madrid's Kevin Gameiro has made since leaving PSG for Sevilla in 2013.

"He would take a step up by discovering a new league, new demands, different competition for places. Kevin Gameiro isn't the same player he was when he was at PSG."
