Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette hoping to emulate Karim Benzema's career

Alexandre Lacazette says he would be delighted if his career ends up following a similar trajectory to that of fellow Lyon academy graduate Karim Benzema.

Lacazette, 24, was named Ligue 1's Player of the Year last season after he helped his hometown club finish second and return to the Champions League. Benzema, 27, also starred for Lyon before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009.

Lacazette has had a mixed season since signing a new contract in August, but he says he would be happy to follow in Benzema's footsteps by leaving Lyon for a bigger club.

"Everybody dreams of having a career like Karim's," he told Canal Football Club.

"If at the end of the season there's the chance to leave because I've had a good season and I've brought the club to where it wants to be, there aren't any problems.

"For now I'm still under contract, so there's no problem staying either."

Lacazette admitted earlier this season that prolonged contract negotiations had impacted on his form.

Speaking in the interview broadcast on Sunday, he said his "difficult summer" had made him stronger mentally and reminded him that there are "good sides and bad sides" to football at the top level.

But the France international also revealed that he was still leaning on advice given to him during a meeting with Thierry Henry earlier in his career.

"He told me things which I wasn't thinking of," Lacazette said. "Like that you no longer have the right to be average after having had a good season, that you can no longer be satisfied with certain things.

"They were things that I wasn't really paying attention to. So it's true that when you have that in mind it allows me to work and produce better performances."
