Grenier prepared to leave Lyon

One of Lyon's brightest young prospects, Clement Grenier, has admitted he would quit the club to further his lofty ambitions.

Grenier, 22, would have left OL for Nice last summer only for an injury to Yoann Gourcuff to halt the move. With Gourcuff plagued throughout the season with injuries, Grenier has filled the creative void in midfield and had a major hand in helping Remi Garde's men sustain a title challenge.

However, with the club needing to cash in on its most valuable assets and his contract due to expire in summer 2014, the French Under-21 international told Lyon Capitale his future may lie elsewhere than at the Stade de Gerland.

"Things move quickly in football, I'm aware of that. I don't want to go back over what happened with Nice,” he said. “It's in the past. I've talked about it with quite a few people at the club.

“It was a tricky period, difficult to cope with, but it helped me grow. I've matured still further. I've always had - more or less - a career plan. When you know where you want to go, you need to establish it, and do everything you can to get there."

Having joined the seven-time Ligue 1 champions as an 11-year-old, Grenier has long been tipped to become a first-team regular as he caught the eye on his rise through the club's ranks. The artful midfielder has clear designs on ensuring his upward trajectory continues apace.

"I'm already fortunate to be at a big club. For me, the most important thing is to always improve,” he added. “If one day I have to leave, because it's time to, then I'll do it. For the moment, though, my sole objective is to get back to my best form with OL."
