LA Galaxy sign defender Robbie Rogers to multi-year contract extension

Robbie Rogers has signed a multi-year contract extension with the LA Galaxy, the club announced on Thursday.

The 27-year-old made 15 appearances for the Galaxy this season, in which he reinvented his game and switched from winger to a full-time defender.

"We are excited that Robbie will remain a part of our organization going forward," Galaxy coach and general manager Bruce Arena said. "He has proven to be a dynamic player in our League and an integral part of our success this year. We look forward to his continued contributions in the years to come."

The Galaxy did not announce details or the length of the contract.

Rogers made over 100 appearances with the Columbus Crew from 2007-2011 before moving to Leeds United in England. After being released in 2013, he announced his retirement at age 25 and revealed that he was gay.

Later that year, Rogers started training with the Galaxy, who offered him a contract after trading prolific scorer Mike Magee to the Chicago Fire to acquire his MLS rights. Upon his debut with the Galaxy he became the first openly gay man to play in a prominent North American professional sports league.

Rogers has earned 18 caps for the U.S. national team, though his last appearance came in 2011.
