EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Liverpool's Joe Gomez said no decision has been made on what position he is going to play this season.
Gomez split right-back responsibilities with Trent Alexander-Arnold last season until he needed surgery to correct an ankle injury that forced him to sit out the Champions League final and World Cup with England.
The 21-year-old has been used as a centre-back at Liverpool in the past and he partnered Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the defence during the first half of Wednesday's 2-1 win over Manchester City in the International Champions Cup.
Asked if he had spoken to the manager about the position he will play in 2018-19, Gomez replied: "No, nothing in particular.
"I just think we're just taking it each game at a time. It's still preseason and we'll just have to see how things progress as time goes on.
"Either way, I've just got to enjoy the minutes I get and keep trying to progress.
"[Playing next to Van Dijk], it's quality. He's obviously a top defender and it's a great person for me to learn off and emulate.
"I'm enjoying the experience of playing alongside him."
Gomez may be required to play right-sided full-back for the final game of Liverpool's U.S. tour after Nathaniel Clyne returned home for family reasons and Alexander-Arnold still on holiday after the World Cup.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane made an instant impact on their return to the Liverpool side as they both scored in the victory over Pep Guardiola's City at MetLife Stadium.
In their first appearances of the preseason, Salah scored 52 seconds after coming on as a substitute before Mane netted an injury-time winner from the penalty spot.
The pair, along with Roberto Firmino, combined to score 91 goals in all competitions last season, with teammate Georginio Wijnaldum confident they can exceed that tally this term.
"They've just been back a few days but they showed today that they're really sharp, so that's good," Wijnaldum said.
"I believe that they can do it. If they believe in themselves, you have to ask them. But I believe they can."
