Liverpool's Mohamed Salah can improve on record-breaking year - James Milner

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- James Milner is confident that Mohamed Salah can produce another record-breaking season in 2018-19.

Salah made an instant impact on his return to the Liverpool team, scoring 52 seconds into his first appearance of the preseason against Manchester City in the International Champions Cup on Wednesday.

The Egypt forward scored 44 goals in all competitions last term, with his 32 in the Premier League setting a new record for the most amount in a single season.

"The best players in the world aren't known because they just did it in one season, they do it over and over again. He is more than capable of doing that," Milner told reporters at MetLife Stadium.

"I think obviously there is pressure when you've had one good year to deliver again. I think he's a top player, he's shown that and he's going to keep improving.

"We need to keep improving as a side with him as well and make sure that all the pressure is not on his shoulders to deliver goals and get us out of tough situations.

"It's down to all of us to help him be the best player he can and do that as part of a team."

Salah only returned to Liverpool from the summer break last Friday, having been granted an extended break following his participation in the World Cup.

As Liverpool returned to preseason earlier this month, they announced they had rewarded the 26-year-old with a new five-year deal.

The contract, which does not include a release clause, ended any speculation that Salah would be leaving Anfield just one year on from his £36.9 million transfer from Roma.

Asked if securing Salah's future was Liverpool's most important piece of business this summer, Milner replied: "Yeah, but I was never worried, personally.

"There's always going to be stories when players do well. You saw how well he played last season, improving, and he seems happy so I don't see any reason why he'd want to go.

"That's what happens when you have good players. That's a positive thing for us that when there's speculation about your players it means that they are playing well and performing, and he obviously has."
