Pepijn Lijnders returns to Liverpool coaching staff after six months

Pepijn Lijnders has returned to Liverpool to take up a position in the first-team coaching staff, the Merseyside club announced on Tuesday.

Lijnders left Liverpool in at the start of 2018 to become head coach of NEC Nijmegen but parted company with the Dutch side in May after failing to achieve promotion to the Eredivisie.

The 35-year-old coach had remained in close contact with Jurgen Klopp all throughout his time at NEC and has now taken up Liverpool's offer to the return to setup at Melwood.

A statement on Liverpool's website said: "Liverpool FC can confirm that Pepijn Lijnders has returned to take up a role in the club's first-team coaching setup.

"The Dutchman brought a three-and-a-half-season stay at Anfield to an end in January as he took up the managerial reins of NEC in his homeland.

"However, following his departure, Lijnders has agreed to rejoin Jurgen Klopp's backroom staff in a senior capacity."

Lijnders was as spectator in Kiev, Ukraine, last month as he watched Liverpool fall to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Klopp has been without his trusted No. 2 Zeljko Buvac since the end of April after Liverpool announced the Bosnian would be spending time away from the club until the end of the 2017-18 season for "personal reasons."
