Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk slams 'jealous' rivals following Champions League defeat

Virgil van Dijk claims that Liverpool's rivals are "jealous" in the wake of his side's 3-1 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

Gareth Bale's overhead kick and two calamitous errors from Loris Karius grabbed the attention in Kiev but Netherlands international Van Dijk, who played an important role in the competition's latter stages following a January move from Southampton, says that the Reds can hold their heads high following the campaign.

"Of course we should be proud of ourselves," the defender told talkSPORT. "All the teams in England want to be in our position right now.

"They act like they're happy, but I think they should be jealous.

"We were here, unfortunately we lost, but I think we need to take this to next season and make sure we do even better than we did this year."

Liverpool's fourth-placed Premier League finish coupled with defeat in the final means they will be the lowest-ranked English side in next year's Champions League group stage draw.
