Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool's Champions League status would help seal transfers

LIVERPOOL -- Jurgen Klopp has said securing Champions League football again next season would help Liverpool's transfer targets make the "right decision" to join the club.

Liverpool reached the Champions League final with a 7-6 aggregate win over Roma and can confirm a place in next season's tournament with a draw at Chelsea on Sunday.

Although Klopp said players with whom Liverpool have held initial talks have not said a move would depend on a Champions League place, he feels it would strengthen their appeal.

"We battle and challenge with the best football clubs in the world," he told a news conference.

"Whatever you can do to put yourself in a better position to get these players, you should.

"At the moment, we are quite attractive. We pay good wages, we pay transfer fees absolutely OK, so we can go for really good players. That's all clear.

"But other teams are interested in them as well. There are a few soft factors and a few harder factors which help the boys to make the right decision. The right decision would be to join us.

"It's clear that if you are qualified for the Champions League, it is easier to convince specific players."

If Liverpool were to miss out on a top-four Premier League finish they could still ensure Champions League football with a win in next month's final against Real Madrid.

And Klopp said he wanted to ensure there was no hangover from the semifinal when they take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, having dropped points against West Brom and Stoke after Champions League victories.

"I'm not sure if it's a concern, but it's a fact," he said. "In the Premier League, there are not many teams playing for nothing right now. Maybe Everton, Newcastle, Leicester?

"We had two teams, West Brom and Stoke, who were happy for a draw. Sometimes you need a little bit of luck.

"It's intense, we have to play these teams. We had Everton too, which is always intense. A point there, and against West Brom and Stoke, is not exactly what we wanted.

"Chelsea is a different game, but we have to be ready. Hopefully we are."

Joe Gomez and Emre Can are ruled out but Adam Lallana continues to step up his recovery from a hamstring injury.

"We are in contact with Emre. An important day is next Monday and then we can make the decision if he starts training with us or not immediately," Klopp said.

"It would only be good news for the final, probably not for the last game of the season.

"Joe is still waiting for final assessment so we can really figure out what it is exactly. We will know about it in a few days probably, but he is not available for Chelsea.

"Adam trained his first real football session in Rome in the morning after the game. He looked good, so that's OK."
