Trent Alexander-Arnold can beat my Liverpool appearances record - Jamie Carragher

The FC panel answer your tweets on Petr Cech's poor run of form, compare Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah and more.

Jamie Carragher has told the Liverpool Echo that Trent Alexander-Arnold can surpass his total of more than 700 Liverpool appearances.

Alexander-Arnold, in his first season with the senior side, won plaudits for his performances in the two Champions League quarterfinal wins over Manchester City.

And Carragher said he was confident that the 19-year-old Liverpool-born full-back could go on to exceed his tally of 737 outings for the Reds.

"Trent is going to be a Liverpool player for a long time," he said. "I honestly think he could end up making more appearances for the club than I did.

"He will need to avoid injuries, but he's only going to get better and he's going to take a lot of shifting.

"Trent got praise after the first leg against City but it was always going to be difficult to do it again as City were bound to have more possession and pose more of a threat [at the Etihad Stadium].

"Leroy Sane is a top player and the nature of the game was that Trent was left one-on-one with him a lot of times, but he never panicked. It was great to see a local lad performing like that."

Alexander-Arnold said after the game that the fact City boss Pep Guardiola targeted him over two legs had spurred him on to deliver even more.

But Carragher said he would also have bad days, adding: "Young players are bound to have ups and downs, and difficult games now and again like he did against United and Palace.

"He's not the finished article but he's got a lot of talent and he's shown he's got the right attitude and temperament to do with it."

Alexander-Arnold was asked after Tuesday's win at the Etihad Stadium whether he hoped to be part of England's World Cup squad and replied: "Hopefully."

And Carragher believes the England under-21 international is not far away from a call-up to the senior side.

"There's no doubt that he's a future England international," he said. "Gareth Southgate likes to give young players a chance, but he does currently have plenty of options at right-back with Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker.

"From Liverpool's perspective, Jurgen Klopp would probably rather he had a rest this summer after playing so many games.

"Trent won't be far away from the squad. He might just miss out this time, but he will go on to win a lot of caps."
